2025 Star Women in Convenience winner: Anna Diduca
Anna Diduca
Area Leader, Team Ontario
7-Eleven Canada, Inc.
How did you get into this business?
In 1986 the job market was bad in Windsor, Ont. and I needed a job. Just married and still taking night classes at the University of Windsor, I was willing to take anything. The Becker Milk Company was hiring for a store manager, and I jumped at the opportunity to work with people. It was the start of a passion I have for convenience retailing.
What work-related accomplishment are you most proud of during the last 12-18 months?
I retired from the industry in 2017 due to health issues; however, retirement was not for me, so I joined the 7-Eleven team in April 2023 as an area leader. It was difficult coming back after six years. This industry changes quickly, however I was able to adapt to the new technology, innovation and business strategies leading a challenging group of stores to positive results in 14 months.
What do you like most about your job?
People, people, people. My role gives me the opportunity to interact, coach, mentor and learn from so many different people.
What was the biggest challenge of your career?
Coming back after six years and all the new technology was a challenge.
What's the best advice you ever received?
Never be happy with the status quo—try new things and never be afraid to fail.
What's your career highlight/biggest achievement?
In 2012 I was given an opportunity to operate the largest Petro Canada/A&W in Canada. The location was 25 years old and sales were flat. Within 18 months, with the help of an amazing team, we turned a $750,00 A&W into $1.3 million. In 2014 the team was recognized for their outstanding results by winning: Associate of the Year, A&W of the Year and Car Wash Excellence.
What excites you most about the future of this channel?
The addition in September of alcohol to the product assortment has attracted a different guest to our stores. This new shopping pattern is exciting as we begin to understand what else they would like to purchase with alcohol.
What trends or innovations are you keeping an eye on right now. Is there anything you think will shape the business in the next five years?
Home delivery—fastest growing segment of the business, besides alcohol. Cigarette trade—decreased sales and profitability.
