2026 Impact Awards Winner: 7-Eleven Canada
A staggering 40% of global food goes to waste, which is responsible for 10% of greenhouse gas emissions, according to Too Good to Go (TGTG), the social impact company with the goal to fight food waste.
In January 2023, 7-Eleven Canada partnered with TGTG to leverage its mobile app to help reduce food waste by offering customers affordable “Surprise Bags” with items nearing the best-before date at discounted prices.
In the context of rising inflation, this partnership improves affordability and stretches the customer’s dollar, as well as minimizes food waste and diverts it from landfills. The TGTG app features products for about a third of the retail price, offering discounts on a wide variety of high-value items—wraps, sandwiches, muffins, donuts, fruit salads, yogurts, milk, croissants, pastries or cookies—depending on what has sold throughout the day.
The TGTG program helps 7-Eleven achieve its sustainability goals of preventing food waste, lowering CO2 emissions and enabling staff and customers to make a positive impact on the environment. The program also creates opportunities to increase store traffic and growing basket sizes.
The program was initially piloted by 37 stores in British Columbia and Ontario and quickly expanded to over 440 7-Eleven stores across Canada. From the program’s inception, the TGTG program at 7-Eleven Canada stores saved more than 500,000 meals and helped mitigate 2.27M lbs of CO2 emissions.
7-Eleven customers are delighted with the quality of the Surprise Bags and the convenience giant looks forward to continuing its partnership with the Too Good To Go program–a win-win-win that reduces CO2 and food waste, while bringing value to customers.
