2026 Star Women in Convenience winner: Alexa Law
Alexa Law
Director, national key accounts
Sobeys Wholesale
How did you get into this business?
As a Queen’s University Commerce grad, my first job out of school was with Suncor/Petro-Canada. Little did I know that this first job would lead to 20-plus years in the convenience industry.
What are you most proud of?
I am incredibly proud of the reputation our Sobeys Wholesale team is building in the convenience space. Over the last few years, our Sobeys Wholesale key account team has grown significantly by building strong partnerships with both new and existing customers.
What do you like most about your job?
I love the fast-paced environment of our role in this business. There’s never a dull moment and no day is ever the same. We’re always working on something to better support our customers and I’m fortunate to work alongside some of the best people in the business.
Biggest career challenge?
This is a tough one. In retail operations, we are continuously faced with challenges, whether those challenges are operational, technical or socio-economic. I have been fortunate that no matter what the challenge has been, I have worked alongside great teammates that have been able to put the right contingency plans in place to ensure the business continues to succeed.
What’s the best career advice you’ve received?
Although there’s no one specific piece of advice that stands out, I’ve been incredibly fortunate to have had amazing mentors throughout my career. Each mentor has provided me with guidance and support—all of them continuously encourage me to take on new challenges and not to shy away from doing hard things.
Career highlight?
The biggest highlight for me has been building an amazing network of people in the convenience space—both customers and teammates I’ve known my whole career. There’s something special about attending industry events, and knowing that you’ll get to see and catch up with so many friends in the same space.
What excites you most about the future?
There’s so much innovation in the convenience space. Technology plays a big role in the c-store customer experience and product innovation continues to evolve with new and growing categories.
How do you define yourself as a leader?
I see myself as someone my team, my customers and my organization can trust, who is accountable and as someone who is relatable. Those who I work alongside know that I am not shy to ask questions. I ask for input and I ask for support from others when it’s needed. In turn, I want people to know they count on me and come to me anytime with their own questions.
