How did you get into this business?
I started in gas and convenience with Sunoco in the late 1990s, first in site operations then in merchandising where I was a key team member when they rolled out their first UPC scanning POS system. My career under the Petro-Canada banner has taken me from pricebook to fraud and back to category management.
What do you like most about your job?
Working with other team members and mentoring newer colleagues as they begin their career in convenience. My years in many different facets of the business provides a good base of experience that makes my role fun and challenging.
Biggest career challenge?
I have moved around in many different departments that support the gas and convenience business, learning something completely new every time, leading to trepidation at the beginning. However, I’ve learned our biggest challenges end up being the best learning and growth opportunities.
What’s the best career advice you’ve received?
Learn from your missteps and move forward. Build on those mistakes to help you grow professionally and personally.
What excites you most about the future?
How emerging technologies may transform the retail business in meaningful ways, including driving greater efficiency, as well as supporting growth and innovation in this channel.

Sabine Murray embodies the qualities of a Star Women in Convenience for her collaborative leadership, positive attitude and unwavering commitment to supporting both her team and the business. She consistently goes above and beyond to help others, often putting her own work aside to ensure teammates feel supported and set up for success. Her approachable nature, empathy and sense of humor make her a trusted mentor and valued collaborator across the organization. Over the past three years, she has led several impactful initiatives, including onboarding, training and mentoring four peers, helping them build confidence and succeed in their roles. She also played a key role in developing a new signage process, supporting major back-office system changes and contributing to pilot project discussions that improved operational efficiency and execution. In her role, she executes non-alcohol beverage category strategies, including promotions, pricing, planograms, retailer communications and vendor coordination. She also supports data analysis and stakeholder management to drive informed business decisions. Beyond her day-to-day responsibilities, she actively volunteers for cross-functional projects and workplace initiatives, consistently sharing knowledge, improving processes and helping create a positive, engaged workplace culture.
