Jolt looks to bring easily accessible EV charging to Richmond Hill

Fast and inexpensive EV charging should make owning an electric vehicle easier.

Jolt has chosen Richmond Hill, Ontario as the first municipality in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA) for the installation of its first 7kWh free-of-charge system for owners of electric vehicles.

The company to roll out a series of charging stations in Richmond Hill that will provide 7 kWh of daily energy for free through a JOLT app, delivering to vehicle owners between 40-50 kilometres of range in just 15-20 minutes depending on the vehicle they are driving. 

“The federal government’s ambitious goal of installing 200,000 public EV chargers by 2030 needs an accelerated EV charging infrastructure rollout,” says Brendan Dillon, country manager (Canada), Jolt. “As of September 13, 2024, [the company] kicked off a nationwide initiative to electrify the country, starting with this first installation in the City of Richmond Hill . . . a partnership initiated based on the Municipality and the company's aligned values on providing benefits to the local community to help make it easier and simpler to own EVs.”

Dillon adds that by providing this fast, 20-minute charging it will make owning an electric vehicle more affordable and useful for every-day errands around the municipality. “Level 3 DC charging ranging from 25 kilowatts to 50 kilowatts. The first 7 kWh is free-of-charge via the JOLT app which is equivalent to 50km of range and takes 15-20 minutes of charging tine. EV drivers have an option to continue charging at a discounted rate thereafter while they continue with their day.”

He company says it will provide some $1,100 in annual savings for Canadian drivers.

“As a starting point, we have two installations in Richmond Hill and we are in conversations with various landowners, the city, and other communities across Canada in an effort to bring more free charging to more Canadians,” Dillon continues. “We’re looking at partnering with a variety of vendors, including cities and towns, private landowners (including retailers, gas stations etc. as an example), and more.”
