2026 Star Women in Convenience winner: Fiona Goy
Fiona Goy
Owner operator
Aisle24, Concord, Ont.
How did you get into this business?
I quit my corporate career when my younger son was diagnosed with autism. For 18 years, I was a stay-at-home-mom, aka ‘mom-therapist.’ When my son was placed in a retail position for his high school co-op program, he loved it from day one. But I am keenly aware of the stark reality that Canadians with disabilities are under-employed. He could be among them. So, my husband and I took on an Aisle 24 franchise to secure his future employment and to invite young people with special needs to train in our store for free, so these Learners can pick up retail skills for their resumes. As Christians, this is our service to God and our way to give back to the community.
What do you like most about your job?
An unattended convenience store, Aisle 24 is open 24/7 for both customers and Learners. When customers know that every purchase they make keeps this training ground open for Learners, they are tremendously supportive. Beyond the groceries they get, they are changing lives, enabling our Learners to become productive citizens!
What are you most proud of?
I had a challenging day last month and was feeling a bit defeated when out of the blue, a Learner's parent texted me and said, ‘She is so proud to be working! You are really helping her confidence and mental health and subsequently my mental health too!’ It was so encouraging, a great reminder of why I am doing this. And my hope is that readers who come across my award profile will be intrigued and consider including someone with disabilities as a team member.
