“Where we sell beer and collect empties is changing in Ontario as part of market modernization. In an ongoing process, The Beer Store is adapting to market changes and making the hard decision to close retail locations. We know this is difficult news for consumers, recyclers and our employees,” said Ozzie Ahmed, VP retail The Beer Store. “The Beer Store recognizes the contributions our employees make to the business and in the communities where we operate. All efforts will be made to support employees through this process in alignment with commitments and agreements.”
With a growing number of Beer Store locations shutting down in the province, consumers looking to return empties are now struggling to find place to do so.
Recognizing the challenge, the Beer Store launched a new Empty Return Locator to make it easier than ever to find a Beer Store or alternative retailer that is accepting empties.
Consumers can find the locators on the Beer Store’s website and on the site’s navigation bar select ‘Returning Empties’. A menu will drop down, and one needs to select ‘where to Return Empties’ t find the nearest location to them.
“We’ve been accepting empties and returning customer deposit money for generations – we are recycling leaders,” said Ahmed. “Ontarians want to recycle – we’re making it simple and convenient to find Beer Store and other authorized locations.”
All grocery stores that sell alcohol will be required to accept the return of empties and refund customer deposits starting January 1, 2026. This is part of consumer retail alcohol modernization, found in the Early Implementation Agreement and provincial regulations.
