A third straight month of rising gas prices from the war in Iran pushed the annual rate of inflation above 3% for the first time since 2023, Statistics Canada said Monday.

Statistics Canada says retail sales rose 0.5% to $73.0 billion in April, helped higher by increased sales at gas stations and auto dealers.

Basic groceries such as bread, meat, cereal and produce are already tax-exempt. The budget bill would extend the exemption to snacks, soft drinks and prepared meals such as rotisserie chickens in grocery and convenience stores.

The 13% jump in adjusted earnings per share and resilient digital sales of nearly $293 million signal operational momentum, even as network sales shrinks to 7,034 locations.

Convenience stores and gas stations had some inflation relief thanks to the tax holiday, but the war in the Middle East could cause another price surge.
