Petro Service Limited (also called PetroService) provides fuelling, EV charging and car wash infrastructure to retailers and fleet operators across Canada. With the recent acquisition of Calgary-based MI Petro, the Saint John, N.B.-based company has accelerated its expansion in Western Canada while strengthening its national service platform.

We spoke with president Laurent Frenette about why car washes are emerging as an important part of the company’s broader growth strategy.

How important are car washes to overall profitability?

Car washes have become an important part of the business for many fuel and convenience retailers. They help drive steady revenue and repeat visits, making them a strong complement to fuel sales. In Canada and the United , car wash is the fastest growing revenue stream for the site operators.

What changes are you seeing in usage?

Customers are using car washes more consistently throughout the year, not just during peak seasons. We’re also seeing more interest in premium options that offer speed, quality and convenience.

How is car wash technology evolving?

Automation, better water use, and easier payment options are driving change in the industry. Technology is helping operators run more efficiently while also making the experience smoother for customers. Remote monitoring of systems, detailed reporting on soap and water consumption, and generally larger (tunnels) equipment are all part of the evolution in the car wash industry.

How are environmental regulations shaping decisions?

Environmental standards and water use are playing a bigger role in investment decisions. Retailers are looking for systems that use less water and energy while still meeting and exceeding customer expectations.

Do you see car washes becoming a bigger part of the “energy hub” model?

Yes. As sites become more than just places to fuel up, car washes help bring in traffic and keep customers on site longer. They’ve become an important part of the overall business mix.

What’s one mistake operators make with car washes?

One common mistake is underestimating the importance of regular maintenance and day-to-day oversight. When a system is well-maintained, customers notice and are more likely to come back.  Regular maintenance also allows the optimization of soap and water consumptions, which in turn reduces the number of re-washes requested by the customer.
