Maximize beverage alcohol sales: Winning strategies for Canadian holiday weekends
As the long weekend approaches, Canadian convenience retailers have a prime opportunity to drive significant revenue by optimizing their beverage alcohol category. With shifting consumer habits and increased foot traffic during summer holidays, mastering the art of the "last-minute" purchase is essential for capturing maximum market share. From prioritizing cold storage to leveraging cross-merchandising with high-impulse snacks, retailers must act now to ensure their shelves are stocked and their teams are prepared for the holiday surge.
To help, Convenience Store News Canada compiled 10 valuable strategies.
1. Keep it cold, always: "Cold is king" is the most universal recommendation. Convenience shoppers often purchase for immediate consumption, and if the product isn't chilled, they will simply choose something else.
2. Prioritize visibility and merchandising: Ensure products are at eye level, priced clearly, and easy for customers to find. Group brands logically by style or pack size so customers can compare options quickly without searching.
3. Curate for your customer, not SKU count: Avoid the trap of trying to carry every available SKU. Instead, focus on a balanced mix of trusted national brands that shoppers expect to find, alongside key local options that reflect local shopper behaviour.

4. Maximize cross-merchandising: Increase basket size by pairing beer and cider with high-impulse convenience items such as salty snacks, barbecue essentials, prepared foods or pizza.
5. Optimize product formats: While single sales are key for immediate consumption, be ready to offer larger formats (six-packs and 12-packs) for customers who treat convenience stores as a destination for weekend/take-home purchases or need to stock up for a last-minute party.

6. Utilize turnkey promotions: Engage shoppers without adding extra work by leveraging supplier-provided displays, point-of-sale materials and in-case programs like contests or gift-with-purchase offers that are easy to implement.
7. Adopt a data-driven approach: Use recent sales data to identify and prioritize the top 20 to 30 SKUs that drive the majority of your volume, ensuring these staples are always stocked to prevent lost sales.

8. Maintain planogram agility: Keep planograms flexible; grouping products by occasion (e.g., BBQ, picnic, cottage) can be highly effective. Plus, good rule of thumb is to dedicate space using the 4-to-1 ratio (one small producer product for every four large producer products).
9. Engage and educate staff: Ensure employees understand basic beer styles and pairings so they can confidently answer customer questions, recommend products and suggest items (don't forget the ice!) to accompany their purchase.
10. Order early and stock up: Anticipate the holiday surge by placing orders well in advance. Since store deliveries may be less frequent than usual during long weekends and there are still some kinks in the LCBO Wholesale system, retailers should order enough stock to avoid shortages and find space for back-up inventory. That's right, it's the August long weekend, but now is the time to prepare for Labour Day!
